Build an Aquarium
This video shows you how to build an aquarium from used glass and make it cheaply. This aquarium is constructed from old window glass and has a capacity of 52 gallons. Although I prefer to purchase a display aquarium new, there will be times when a custom size may be required. There may be a wall installation where it is better to build an aquarium into the custom dimensions rather than try to shoehorn a commercial standard size tank. There are lots of other times when a custom tank may be advantageous.
When you are getting your materials, although this video shows the use of recycled glass for the walls and bottom, it is usually better to build an aquarium from brand new glass. The reason for this is that, unless you know the history of the glass you have obtained, the glass may not possess the full strength needed to hold the water inside. Glass is a liquid, not a solid, it may appear uniform, but if it has been positioned for a long time in a particular orientation, the glass may have changed its thickness as the liquid slowly succumbs to gravity and flows toward the bottom. Very old glass should be ignored, the top may be slightly thinner than the bottom. New glass should be uniform and strong throughout.
Build an Aquarium Cheaply
Uarujoey has an extensive list of DIY videos, and he is very careful to outline the costs of each project, as well as the materials required. This video on how to build an aquarium is another instance of that style. The aquarium is much cheaper to build than to purchase new, as long as you are willing to put in the time and the effort required to assemble it. There will be cases where this guide will be invaluable. As long as you know that the glass is strong enough to hold the capacity of water, this is an excellent video to use as guide to build an aquarium on your own.
